The Fundamental Orders, adopted by Connecticut Colonists on January 24, 1639, is considered to be the first written constitution in the western world. While short, it sets principles that were later applied to the US Constitution. These include government based on the consent of the governed (including spelling out individual rights and how they are ensured) and election of leaders by free men.
Connecticut was the first state to set a speed limit for automobiles; in 1901 the Connecticut government set a speed limit of 12 miles per hour. In 1937 it became the first state to issue permanent license plates for cars.
Among the silly laws allegedly on the books in Connecticut: in order for a pickle to be considered a pickle, it has to bounce; silly string is banned in the town of Southington, and it is illegal to walk backwards on city sidewalks after sunset in Devon.

Nutmegger? So what does nutmeg have to do with Connecticut? Well, no one really knows. One theory (the most popular told to Connecticut children) is that swindlers from the state were notorious for selling counterfeit nutmegs made from wood to unsuspecting travelers and residents of seaside towns. Another more innocuous explanation is that traders from Connecticut were in fact selling real nutmeg, but customers unfamiliar with the unusually hard native form of the spice may have felt they had been tricked into buying a wooden counterfeit. The source of the legend traces back to the 1830’s newspaper column “The Sayings and Doings of Samuel Slick, of Slickville”, who claimed that Captain John Allspice, a popular trader who did business in Charleston, would cut his purchase of fifty barrels of nutmeg into two and fill the remaining space with wooden counterfeits, which looked so real that it was impossible to spot the difference unless you bit the nutmeg with your teeth. Sikorsky Aircraft and United Technologies Igor Sikorsky, a Kiev-born immigrant, founded Sikorsky in 1925 in Roosevelt, New York. In 1929, the company moved to Stratford, Connecticut and became part of United Technologies Corporation. Originally focused on multi-engine airplanes and amphibious aircraft (such as the Sikorsky Clipper), Sikorsky began developing the first practical helicopter, continuing work he had begun in Russia in 1909. In 1939, the first tethered and free-flight helicopter flights took place between 1939 and 1940; the V-S 300 design remains the basis for most helicopter designs today. Cuisine New Haven-style pizza (known as “Apizza”) is considered by culinary historians (such as Jeffrey Steingarten) to be among the best styles of Neapolitan-American pizza, along with New York City. While limited geographically until recently, restaurants specializing in the style have opened in the Washington DC, Oregon, Michigan, Texas and Tokyo. The lobster roll originated in Milford in 1929 at a restaurant called Perry’s. The Connecticut-style lobster roll is simply warm lobster meat soaked in butter and served on a steamed bun. The more popular Maine style, consisting of cold lobster meat served with mayonnaise, celery, lemon juice, and lettuce is known locally as a lobster salad roll, and is more well-known outside of New England. Connecticut is recognized by the Library of Congress as the birthplace of the modern hamburger. Louis Lunch in New Haven is known as the oldest continually operating hamburger restaurant, and is known for disliking the addition of any condiments to the burger, especially ketchup. Yale students who sneak in ketchup have been asked to leave in the past. Charter Oak The Charter Oak was a large white oak tree estimated to be around 600-700 years old at the time it fell in 1856. According to tradition, the state’s Royal Charter of 1662 was hidden in the hollow portion of the tree to prevent its confiscation by the English governor-general; this story became a symbol of American Independence. Captain Joseph Wadsworth (ancestor of Revolutionary general Elijah Wadsworth) was was credited as the person who hid the charter from Royal authorities, who did not like the amount of local autonomy the charter gave to colonists. After it fell during a violent storm, timber from the tree was made into several chairs, which are displayed in the Hartford Capitol Building. The Charter Oak adorns the state quarter and is still a symbol for the state as a whole today. This is the sixth of my “Missing in Connecticut Series.” I will be introducing you to the missing people of Connecticut every Wednesday (according to this list on CharleyProject: http://www.charleyproject.org/geo/eastern.html ). Please see my history for the previous submissions and share your thoughts about this case below! Kevin John Belknap was born on May 24, 1950. He was 5’10 and between 185 and 190 pounds. He was white. His brown hair was going gray. Some sources state he had brown eyes, others state they were hazel. The only identification information on file in this case is dental records. Kevin was a blackjack dealer at Foxwoods Resort Casino. The casino is located on the Mashantucket Pequot Indian Reservation. 25% of the casino’s revenue goes to the state; as of 2007 that amounted to $200 million. Foxwoods is much more than a casino - it also has hotels, fine dining, and shopping. There is another popular casino nearby, Mohegan Sun. If this sounds like an advertisement, I’ll admit that I am one of the many people who enjoys going occasionally (although I am in no way affiliated!). The Pequot Museum is nearby, it’s the largest Native American museum in the world, and it rocks. If you are ever in the area, you should definitely check the area out! 83 current or past employees rated Foxwoods on GlassDoor and gave it a 2.9 out of 5 for overall work environment. One common complaint listed is that there is not a lot of upward mobility at the casino and that tribal members are preferred for positions over other people. Was Kevin unhappy with his job? Kevin had just gotten off of work on April 8, 2001. He was last seen at his residence at 20 Cutler Street in Stonington, Connecticut at 5:00 pm that day. The house can be seen here to give context to his case: http://bit.ly/2deWNJT. Stonington is a small coastal tone. It serves as the backdrop to the 2012 film Hope Springs if you are interested in getting a visual of the area! Kevin has never been seen or heard from again. His wife reported him missing four days later on April 12, 2001. What was the state of Kevin’s marriage like? Was there some marital unhappiness? Why did she take so long to report the man as missing? Or, was it that he ‘disappeared’ often? Or did the police give her difficulty in reporting him missing? (Some jurisdictions seem to make people wait for long periods before making official reports.) His blue 1998 Buick LeSabre was later found abandoned in the vicinity of Watch Hill in Rhode Island. According to google maps, this trip would take about 12 to 20 minutes during 5:00 traffic on a weekday (this assumes that he left right after he was supposedly last seen.) Watch Hill is an exclusive, wealthy coastal village located in Westerly, Rhode Island. The village is filled with sprawling Victorian-style cottages which may look modest, but are extremely expensive. Taylor Swift, Conan O’Brien, Henry Ford (of Ford Motors,) and Clark Gable are only some of the town’s past and present residents. Kevin’s car was unlocked and his work uniform was left in it. There was no other sign of him at the scene. A search was conducted of the surrounding land and sea but nothing was located. Bolleswoods commented stating that despite the wealth of the area, the beaches are public. Due to the fact that it was April, they may not have been populated heavily at the time. This is especially true when you consider the fact that it was cold and windy on the day he went missing (thanks deeperintomovies for looking it up.) She states that one beach in particular, Napatree Point is long and isolated. It has an abandoned fort from the 1900s with underground tunnels. She posits that if Kevin wanted to take his life, it may have been a good place to do so. Did Kevin run away from an unhappy life? Did he have a mental break which prompted his leaving? Did he take his own life? Did Kevin’s disappearance have to do with his job at the casino? Did he anger a wealthy client and get lured back to Watch Hill to face the consequences? If that was the case, why was his uniform located in his car? Why was there no other evidence? Could a murderer’s financial or social status make it easier to do away with a body? Does Watch Hill keep secrets for its residents? Hopefully this secret will be leaked someday. http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/b/belknap_kevin.html Bolleswoods commented that [s]he used to live in Stonington and has family and friends who still do. According to their dad community belief is that Kevin ran away from a girlfriend and is no longer considered missing. He is still listed as actively missing on some sites including the Charleyproject (hence my post,) NamUs, etc. I am not sure how frequently the sites are updated, though. Perhaps that is the informal, popular belief and police haven't found evidence so they have to keep the case open.
Ahoy. UConn alum and life-long Hartford area resident here to talk about things to do in Hartford before and after basketball. I'm sure there are going to be literally dozens of tourney attendees going to Hartford for the first time. So if you're one of them, read on. Note: I fucking love Hartford, but that's perhaps because it's easier than hating the place you're from. Note: I can update this throughout the day, and am welcome to suggestions. Note: I'm making a few assumptions: First, that you don't have access to a car, and second, that you're somewhere around 30, have a little cash to spend, and don't have kids. 1) Drinking. Downtown Hartford has a lot of bars. They are, for the most part, totally regular. Here are some places that might be the same place, I dunno. I'm only gonna highlight some favorites. But there are plenty. Walkable from the XL Center
Vaughans: A gastropub. Some big TVs, some heavily carved wood ornaments, some good food and a decent draft list.
Pig's Eye Pub: Depending on the time and day, this place can get rowdy with the under 25 crowd. But most of the time it's a pleasant, large, faux-dive with a few pool tables, a rooftop patio, and a larger than average draft list.
City Steam. They brew their own beer and have lots of pool tables. Also TVs. Also a comedy club in the basement?? I don't go here much.
Dish/Salute/Trumbull Kitchen: The holy troika of the world's most regular bars. Do you like grilled salmon? A place to get a cocktail or wine or a beer? Wearing a sport jacket with jeans? Than these places are for you.
Allyn Street Bars: Are you trying to make out with a stranger? Get ready! Sorta dirty, sorta trashy, but also sorta fun if you're in the right mood. A string of bars to which some, in the words of Louis CK, wear their stripey goin' out to get laid shirts.
Maybe snag an uber but worth it
Hog River Brewery. It's a brewery in an old tire factory. Board games, food trucks, draft cider. It's delightful.
Little River Restoratives. Creative cocktails and small snacks. Really a wonderful place to which I hope you all give all your money.
2) Food
Bin 228. Popular with theater goers. Quiet spot for sandwiches and salads and some other entrees. Real good food for not that much. A personal favorite so it's getting a plug.
Dish/Salute/Trumbull Kitchen: The holy troika of the world's most regular restaurants. Do you like grilled salmon? A place to get a cocktail or wine or a beer? Wearing a sport jacket with jeans? Than these places are for you.
Max's Downtown: It's a real nice place to which I've never been but about which I've heard good things.
The Capital Grille: Another real nice place. Real good steak.
Bear's Smokehouse: The best largest barbecue place in Hartford. Consistently good food served cafeteria style.
Black Eyed Sally's: It's under the Pig's Eye and does southern-inspired cuisine. Gumbo, barbecue, chicken + waffles, that kind of thing. I imagine that if you're here from Memphis or Tulane it might be a little weird. But I bet you're not coming to Hartford from there.
an Uber-ish ride away
Republic at the Linden. Americanish cuisine, a nice bar. Really nice space. At the edge of what constitutes reasonable walk from the XL.
First and Last Tavern. Institution. Pizza. Italian Food. Large tables for a group of 6 to talk loudly with one another.
Mozziacato di Pasquale. Italian bakery and cafe. Get a few pignoli and some lemon ice.
A lot of other places that serve various things.
3) To Do
Go for a walk in Bushnell Park. Do it! It's a nice place. Olmsted-designed with lots of statues and paths and views of the skyline.
The Wadsworth Atheneum: America's oldest public art museum. Worth the $15 admission. Or just go take a photo with the Stegosaurus sculpture to the left.
Connecticut Science Center: It mostly targets the youngins, but it's a fun place to go.
Live Music: Lol jk. What live music happens in Hartford is, for lack of a better term, a bit underground. We don't really have a "go here to listen to live music!" scene. Black Eyed Sally's will have jazz or blues fairly often, though.
Shopping: Lol jk. But Hartford Prints has some nice stuff re: stationary/gifts/things to put on your wall or shelf. Stackpole Moore and Tryon is a high-ish end store for people over 40. Hartford Denim Co. is an uber ride away but they make and sell jeans if you're into that sorta thing.
4) To not do.
West Hartford Center. It's cool I guess? But also super boring offers several bars in close proximity to one another. If you can get there and back easily, then go ahead. It's a fun time. There's a Joseph A Bank, a Whole Foods, and a West Elm. There's an Ann Taylor I think.
New Haven. Way cooler than West Hartford Center, but it's a 45 minute drive. Do you really want to see Yale that badly? They have a museum with dinosaur fossils though :-/
Foxwoods/Mohegan. Yes, they're the biggest casinos in America. But aside from that, you can only play one game at a time. For a weekend in Hartford, not worth the side trip.
What I want to emphasize, above all else, is that Hartford is a wonderful place. In terms of downtown size, it's roughly comparable to Louisville, Raleigh, Memphis, and Richmond. There really is a lot to do. And it's as safe as comparably sized cities. By which I mean, don't go wandering around strange residential streets outside of the downtown at 3am. You don't need to get a ride from one side of downtown to the other, though. Most of all, tell your friends you had a good time, okay? We deal with a lot of shit-talk, some of it justified, but if you can't enjoy a weekend in Hartford it's because you didn't put any effort in. Put some effort in, and Hartford will show you a nice time.
